⬢ Personality:
Leona, as one might expect from a lion, is very proud, and surprisingly driven. He wants, desperately, to be "number one" in whatever he does, from being exceptionally skilled in magic, to becoming dorm head, to winning maglift tournaments, to even becoming king, and he has a natural knack for success. He tends to be very good at whatever he puts his mind to, and is very intelligent, able to plan and strategize ways to get to the top of whatever he's trying, even if he doesn't especially have a knack for it, or if there's someone better than him at it, even to the point of cheating to get ahead. After all, it's not cheating if you don't get caught, and the king of beasts used every resource at his disposal, so he'd be stupid if he didn't do the same.
But...
He was born as the second son, and his older brother is already married and has a child. Unless something tragic happens, he can never be king, and even in such an event, he's been looked down on for most of his life, so it would be a hollow "victory". As a result, he has a very defeatist attitude about life in general, and a jaded worldview that shows he probably wasn't always like this. He remarks on how lazy his brother is - even when he himself skips classes constantly to nap - and how he thinks he'd be a better king, how he would be king if succession was based purely on merit, and there's nothing to indicate that he's wrong. So he has a tendency to want to give up as soon as something gets hard, and as soon as his plans fall apart, much to the disappointment of the people who believe in him.
...
I’m doing this because I’m concerned about the students’ futures, you know?
That said, he does extend his driven nature and meticulous planning to looking after his "pride," no matter how small it might be. Savanaclaw - his dorm - is his pride, and as much as he might act like he doesn't care about them on the outside, he does care deep down, and wants the best for them, to the point where he'd lie and cheat to ensure they aren't defeated in the first round of an unfairly skewed tournament yet again, so the professional scouts will get to see his boys play at their best.
In the Halloween event, too, his dorm's booth was being destroyed by guests to the school, and he was the first to want to fight to protect their hard work. He insisted at the time that it was because the guests were interrupting his nap, but we've seen in other cases that when his naps are interrupted, he does get annoyed, and he might yell, but he won't fight about it, and will simply go find a different spot to sleep. The fact that he was ready to throw down shows that he cares more than his pride and tough-guy image will allow him to admit.
While he does have a certain affinity for the ideal of "go big or go home," he does recognize when finesse is necessary and isn't going to crash through every problem presented to him. Thought and meticulous planning (tenacity spanning decades of denial, etc. etc.) is what's most important in the end. He plays chess well, to the point where no one else in the school stands a chance against him, which frustrates him to no end.
"Hahaha! This guy’s not bad at all! He’s sending chills down my spine."
When the main character signs an ill-advised contract with Azul (the Ursula expy, to put into perspective just how bad of an idea that is) to help out his friends, he has to go to Leona for some assistance in dealing with the problems presented with that. Previously, Leona had been disparaging of the main characters do-gooder attitude in addition to being a "herbivore" - which is what Leona seems to call everyone who is a non-carinivore beast-person, but especially uses it in reference to humans - but this time, when the spunky do-gooder attitude is not directly detrimental to his own goals, he finds amusement in it. So he's more than willing to indulge in some double-standards when it comes to achieving his goals, perhaps unsurprisingly. What is somewhat surprising, though, is how he actually does seem to like people who are willing to face down seemingly insurmountable odds. Both in the case of going soft on the main character, and in the case of when Jack was being bullied off the maglift team. In both cases, despite his laziness, he still stepped up to help out when he was needed most.
⬢ Powers:
⬢ Offensive Magic: Offensive magic in Twisted Wonderland is divided into four categories; fire, water/ice, earth/wind, and null, with null attacks manifesting as either light or dark. Leona's, like most other characters in the game, manifests as dark magic. It follows the typical rpg weakness triangle of Fire > Earth > Water > Fire, with Null being neutral to everything.
⬢ Practical Magic: Twisted Wonderland also has a wide array of practical magic that doesn't come up in the game's battle system, but does come up in side stories and the main plot. A full list of the currently known classes is here.
⬢ Unique Magic / King's Roar: In addition to offensive and practical magics, everyone capable of using magic in the Twisted Wonderland universe has a magic that is unique to them (hence the name). Leona's is King's Roar, and has the ability of causing anything around him to dry up and turn to dust. Usually, this is restricted to things he's touching, but when he goes all out, it's shown to cause a minor earthquake and kick up a sandstorm. It can be indiscriminate in its destruction (turning a whole stack of papers to sand in an instant), or very, very precise (focusing on Ruggie's mouth and throat while Leona was holding his arm), depending on how Leona feels like using it. It's also ambiguous as to whether or not he needs an incantation to use it. Sometimes he uses one before the magic begins, sometimes he says it while the magic has already begun, and sometimes he doesn't use it at all. The incantation is: "I am starvation, I am drought. I am what steals your tomorrows. Kneel before me! King's Roar!"
⬢ Blot/Overblot: (Copying from this page): Blot is the exhaust of one’s magic, which appears on users’ magical gems as black stains. It’s lethal to the body and could greatly hurt someone if they accumulate too much. Those with more magic power blot quicker than those with less. The stains will disappear on their own with time and rest. Overblot happens if a mage accumulates too much blot and negative energy, so they fall into a ‘berserk’ mode where they become very overpowered and unable to think clearly. It’s an extremely dangerous state to be in and they must be reverted as soon as possible. Usually, those who have recovered from an overblot can’t remember what happened during it.
⬢ Specifics: Despite repeating his third year twice, Leona is extremely talented in magic, being able to replicate a potion just by smelling it, and discovering his unique magic when he was very, very young, which is unusual. One of his "good" (the basic, lowest achievement) lines in alchemy class is "Gold… Not bad." which shows that even difficult feats like creating gold is easy to him. His dorm also determines its head by a magic duel, and Leona's method for choosing his vice-head is to only offer the position to someone who had the guts to challenge him. Everyone who has tried has been so humiliated, they declined the offer. Based on his card-elements, he has a particular affinity for earth/wind magic (his main SSR is double-earth, and there are more earth elements than any other when combining all his cards), and a dislike for null magic (none of his cards have null as an option, though he has used it as an enemy the player has to fight), probably due to his need to always find an advantage, and null magic is neither strong nor weak against anything. His best subject Ancient Curses.
⬢ Special Talent: No matter where he is, Leona can fall asleep in three seconds or less.
